I let videogames and the Internet distract me from getting my work done.
Video games and certain sites on the Internet are meant to be addicting. It can be hard to turn off the console when you’re only halfway through a level or leave BuzzFeed when there’s more cat gifs to enjoy. But you can’t play video games and ignore your textbooks – you’ll never graduate on time. Make sure you are being productive if you want to be a successful gamer or Internet enthusiast and college graduate in the future.
STEP 2: SELECT THE REASON that best describes your situation, keeping in mind there may be multiple relevant reasons.
I START PLAYING VIDEOS GAMES OR LOOKING AT INTERNET SITES AND CAN’T STOP.
STEP 3: Explore potential STRATEGIES to address the problem.
Set aside specific time to play video games or browse the Internet. Create a well-planned schedule, and adhere to that schedule – even if you’re only halfway through a level. By following a schedule, you can more easily balance school and gaming. (For help with making a schedule, visit our section “I don’t know how to create a good weekly schedule or use a planner wisely.”) If you need a reminder, set an alarm to go off when your playing time is up; it will become easier once you develop a habit of turning off the screen when the alarm rings.
We do not advise playing video games without setting limits or using a schedule. In the end, always think of your future goals – which will help you better achieve those goals: video games or academics?
