Semester in Zanzibar, Tanzania
Alva Huang (CIT, '26) spent her fall semester studying abroad in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Alva says:
What is your favorite memory from your time abroad?
My favorite memory is having meals and watching Swahili TV with my host family! I was unsure about living with a host family at first, but they were welcoming and kind and taught me a lot about Swahili and Zanzibari culture.
What were some unexpected challenges you faced while abroad, and what strategies did you use to overcome them?
This was my first time in Africa, so experiencing a new culture and new living conditions was challenging at first. To help me adjust, I grounded myself in the present and reminded myself that I was there to learn, and it would be okay if I made mistakes or felt uncomfortable at times.
What personal growth have your experienced during your time abroad and how has it impacted your future goals and aspirations?
This program challenged me to think differently about myself and the world around me. It was unlike a traditional study abroad experience because we spent so much time doing fieldwork in some of the most biodiverse forests and coral reefs in the world, which to me is more valuable than attending lectures in a classroom. I have a greater awareness of global environmental conservation and East African culture now, and I hope to take that with me wherever I decide to go next.
Any advice for other students thinking of studying abroad?
Plan ahead and be prepared for anything!
