Employing Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Policy Analysis
Course Number: 84-703
This course is designed to equip students with the tools and judgment needed to work with empirical evidence in policy analysis in a practical way. The course focuses on how both qualitative and quantitative methods are used in the real world of policy—how to choose appropriate methods, interpret results, and translate findings into clear, defensible policy arguments.
Students will gain hands-on experience analyzing and visualizing data, working with descriptive statistics, and applying regression, prediction, and causal inference. In parallel, the course will introduce qualitative methods commonly used in policy research, such as case-based reasoning, focus groups, and gaming. Emphasis is placed on understanding methodological assumptions, strengths, and limitations, rather than on advanced technical implementation.
Through applied exercises, short projects, and case studies, students will practice critically evaluating empirical studies.
