March 14, 2025

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community:

I am pleased to officially announce the global search for the next dean of the College of Engineering. As I shared in my recent announcement, Dean Bill Sanders has accepted the exciting opportunity to serve as president of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) starting in July.

The College of Engineering is renowned for its excellence, innovation and the significant impact its research has on society. Its acclaimed faculty focuses on transformative results that drive the intellectual and economic vitality of our community, nation and world. Its academic programs produce technically proficient and creative engineers equipped to provide cutting-edge solutions to global challenges. I look forward to welcoming the college鈥檚 next leader, who will guide our continued growth and help shape its next chapter of innovation and excellence.

To guide this important search, I have assembled a search committee that includes representation from across the college and university:

In collaboration with the executive search firm Isaacson, Miller, the committee will encourage nominations and applications to build a robust and highly qualified applicant pool. Throughout the spring semester, they will engage stakeholders across campus to obtain input on the role and candidates, aiming to fill the position for the next academic year. To learn more about this role and the search process, as well as to submit confidential inquiries, nominations or applications, visit the search website.

I extend my gratitude to the College of Engineering鈥檚 leadership team for their collaboration and guidance during this transitional period, with special thanks to Vijayakumar (Kumar) Bhagavatula, the Helen Whitaker Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, for serving as interim dean throughout the search process. I am eager to work alongside the college and members of our broader community to identify the next leader to build upon the school鈥檚 progress and shape its bright future.
