Riding Pittsburgh Regional Transit

Spring 2026 PRT Changes

Currently, faculty, staff and students can ride PRT vehicles by tapping their CMU ID card when boarding. However, PRT is transitioning to mobile ticketing, and physical ID cards will soon not be accepted.

  • Beginning Monday, April 6, faculty, staff and students not graduating in May 2026 must use the PRT Ready2Ride mobile app instead of their CMU ID card to board PRT vehicles. Please set up a CMU Ready2Ride account using your Andrew email address and start using the app now.
  • Students scheduled to graduate in May 2026 may continue to use their CMU ID cards to board PRT until May 31. Graduating students enrolled to continue their studies at 好色先生TV must start using the app beginning June 1.

Carnegie Mellon has an agreement with Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) to allow our eligible faculty, staff and students to ride PRT buses, light rail and inclines for free. Visit for route and schedule information.

Learn more about using the PRT Ready2Ride app, including how to set up an account linked to your CMU Andrew email address and activate your free monthly passes. Note: Don't have a mobile device? See the FAQ for details on how to ride PRT.

To find your monthly pass, scroll down the app home screen to the box that says “Calendar Monthly Pass - CMU U-Pass.” You can also find the pass in your Ticket Wallet. (NOTE: Each pass will say “inactive” until it is used for the first time. After that, the next time the app is refreshed, it will say “active” for the remainder of the month.) Each pass is valid for an unlimited number of rides during the indicated month. If you are having issues receiving passes, contact the Computing Services Help Center.

Activating Your Pass and Launching the QR Code Before You Ride

You must activate each monthly pass when using it for the first time by selecting it on the app home screen. Click the green “Activate Ticket” button twice to generate your initial QR code, which is your boarding ticket. Once you activate your pass, tapping on the pass on the home screen will automatically generate QR codes until the pass expires.

The QR code screen is dynamic – with constantly moving elements – for added security. Please activate your pass and have your QR code ready BEFORE you board the vehicle so as not to hold up the boarding process.

Each QR code is valid for one hour and can be used multiple times. If you close the QR code screen, simply tap the pass on the home screen to display the code again. After an hour, you will need to tap the pass to generate a new QR code.

Boarding the PRT Vehicle

When you board the PRT vehicle, hold your QR code up to the validator “eye” until you hear the tone and see the green “valid” light on the screen.

Unfortunately, the Ready2Ride app does not integrate with Google or Apple wallets. The QR code “ticket” that is scanned when boarding PRT vehicles can only be generated by selecting your CMU pass in the Ready2Ride app.

PRT’s Ready2Ride app serves multiple audiences, including general travelers who must purchase tickets or passes to ride. CMU users do not need to purchase passes or tickets to ride PRT. Your CMU pass will automatically be sent to your CMU Ready2Ride account. Please ignore all purchase-related prompts in the app and do not make any payments to your CMU account. If you accidentally add funds to your CMU account, for a refund.

No. PRT’s app serves multiple audiences, and those codes are for general travelers adding cash to their Ready2Ride account at local retailers. Each monthly pass is valid through 2 a.m. on the first day of the following month (e.g., the September pass will expire at 2 a.m. on Oct. 1). At that time, the expired pass will move to the “History” tab in your Ticket Wallet.

If your monthly pass expires and turns gray while you are on board a PRT vehicle, you can complete your current trip, but you may not board another vehicle until you activate the new month’s pass.

You only need to be connected to the internet to receive your new monthly pass at the beginning of each month. You do not need an internet connection to activate your pass or display the QR code for scanning.

To protect your personal information and prevent account fraud, the Ready2Ride app can only be used on one designated device at a time, so you cannot download it to multiple devices and alternate using them. You can change your designated device (e.g., install the app on a new phone and stop using the old one), or uninstall and reinstall the app on the same device, no more than three times in a six-month period. If you do not adhere to these requirements, your account may be locked or deactivated. If that occurs, please contact the Computing Services Help Center.

The app may log you out after app/device updates or periods of nonuse. Be sure to use a memorable password or save it in a secure password app on your device in case you need to log back in.

Many people prefer to stay logged into their Ready2Ready app account for convenience, but if you choose to sign out of your account and experience any issues logging back in, contact the Computing Services Help Center for assistance.

Troubleshooting

Make sure you are using your Andrew ID CMU email address ending in @andrew.cmu.edu. If it still isn’t working, click on the “forgot my password” link. If you need to reset your password, please note that for security purposes, we highly recommend that you do not reuse your CMU Andrew login password.

Contact the Computing Services Help Center for assistance.

Try logging out and logging back in. If that does not work, try powering your device off and back on. Make sure you are using the latest version of the app and your device's operating system is up to date. If you continue to experience technical difficulties, contact the Computing Services Help Center for assistance.

Some devices with older operating systems do not work as fast as newer phones. If you have an older phone that works a little slower, please be sure to give yourself plenty of time to activate the pass before your vehicle arrives. You should also check to make sure you do not have too many applications open at one time, which can affect the responsiveness of the app. If the screen isn’t showing, contact the Computing Services Help Center during support hours for assistance.

If your ticket QR code cannot be read or displayed, it is not valid. If that occurs, contact the Computing Services Help Center during support hours for assistance.

Show your screen to the vehicle’s driver. As long as they can see your valid QR code, they will let you ride. If you are unable to board using your CMU pass, deboard the vehicle and contact the Computing Services Help Center during support hours for assistance.

To transfer your passes and account to a new device, download the Ready2Ride app to your new device and log in to your account. This will automatically deactivate any tickets and passes on your previous device and switch them to the new device. (Learn more about using the Ready2Ride app.) If your passes are not appearing after logging in, contact the Computing Services Help Center for assistance.

Please note that to protect your personal information and prevent account fraud, the Ready2Ride app can only be used on one designated device at a time, so you cannot alternate using different devices. You also cannot change your designated device (e.g., install the app on a new phone and stop using the old one), or uninstall and then reinstall the app on the same device, more than three times in a six-month period. If you do not adhere to these requirements, your account may be locked or deactivated. If that occurs, please contact the Computing Services Help Center.
