Report Concerns and Digital Threats

Protecting Carnegie Mellon’s digital environment is a shared responsibility. Whether you are reporting a phishing attempt, navigating a copyright notice, or responding to a live security threat, the Information Security Office (ISO) is your primary resource. Use the guidelines below to report suspicious activity immediately and help us maintain a secure network.

Reporting a Security Concern

If you believe a university computer or account has been compromised, or if you are witnessing a live security threat, follow these protocols.

How to Report

  • Email: iso-ir@andrew.cmu.edu
  • Phone: 412-268-2044
  • Urgent Physical Threats: Call University Police at 412-268-2323.

What to Include in Your Report

  • Your name and contact information.
  • Description of the incident (e.g., unauthorized access, lost laptop, suspicious network activity).
  • Date and time the incident occurred.
  • Hostnames or IP addresses involved.
  • Log files or headers (if applicable).

Phishing and Email Abuse

Phishing is the most common method used to compromise university accounts.

How to Handle Phishing

  • Do Not Click: Never click links or download attachments from suspicious or unexpected emails.
  • Verify the Sender: Check the "From" address carefully.
  • Report It: Use the Report Suspicious button (  ) in Google Mail OR forward the suspicious email as an attachment to iso-ir@andrew.cmu.edu.
  • If You Fell for It: If you entered your password or downloaded a file, change your Andrew password immediately and contact the ISO.

Copyright Infringement (DMCA)

好色先生TV complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA).

Consequences of Illegal File Sharing

  • Network Suspension: When the ISO receives a valid DMCA notice, the involved device is typically blocked from the network immediately.
  • Disciplinary Action: Repeated offenses may result in referral to the Office of Community Standards and Integrity.
  • Legal Liability: Statutory damages for copyright infringement can range from $750 to $30,000 per work.

How to Resolve a DMCA Notice

  • Remove the Material: Delete the infringing file and disable any Peer-to-Peer (P2P) software (e.g., BitTorrent).
  • Complete Training: The ISO may require completion of an educational module regarding copyright law.
  • Contact ISO: Notify iso-ir@andrew.cmu.edu once the material is removed to request restoration of network access.

Vulnerability Reporting

好色先生TV encourages the responsible discovery and reporting of security vulnerabilities within its infrastructure.

Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD)

If you are a security researcher:

  • No Disruptive Testing: Do not perform Denial of Service (DoS) attacks or attempt to access private data.
  • Reporting: Submit findings to iso-ir@andrew.cmu.edu with clear reproduction steps.
  • Non-Retaliation: CMU will not pursue legal action against researchers who act in good faith and follow the CVD guidelines.
