For all manuscripts accepted for publication, please take care to convey material that is final and complete. While there will be opportunity to correct typos in the production process, rewriting or heavily editing portions of the work during production would create delay in publication and would need to be reviewed by the acquiring editor.
Please turn in all elements of your work in a single batch, including text files, illustrations, captions and any graphical elements.
All necessary rights and permissions to reproduce text or imagery must be secured and documented in advance of scheduling a book for publication. Please be advised that it is the responsibility of the author to pursue and pay for these permissions, and that it can take significant time to go through these processes with parties that manage rights for copyright holders.
Please note that authors may have to secure rights to reprint their own work if portions of their new publication have appeared in previous books and formats.
Poetry
Upon request from the Design and Production Specialist, authors will provide their manuscript via email or a digital transfer site saved as a Microsoft Word document. The formatting of the pages should include the form(s) of the poems, including intentional indentations, line breaks, stanza breaks, alignment and any other integral structural elements of the work. Do not format pages beyond what is necessary to preserve these elements. Avoid any unnecessary Word styles. The front matter, contents, numbering, font selections and page layout design will be managed by one of the Press鈥檚 experienced professional designers. Please use a single font family and size throughout the text.
Fiction
Upon request from the Design and Production Specialist, authors will provide their manuscript via email or a digital transfer site saved as a Microsoft Word document. These documents should be free of formatting with the exception of necessary italic text as used by the author. Avoid any Word styles. Please use a single font family and size throughout the text. Design and layout decisions will be made by the professional designers on the Press鈥檚 staff.
Nonfiction
Upon request from the Design and Production Specialist, authors will provide their manuscript via email saved as a Microsoft Word document. These documents should be free of formatting with the exception of necessary italic text as used by the author. Avoid any Word styles. Please use a single font family and size throughout the text. Design and layout decisions will be made by the professional designers on the Press鈥檚 staff.
If the manuscript includes graphical elements (photographs, illustrations, charts, etc.), these must be delivered digitally as .jpg files in a single batch with the text file(s). We require high-resolution, print-quality files, meaning each image will be at least the dimensions it is intended to be reproduced at and saved at a resolution of at least 300 dpi/ppi.
The file names for each image should conform to the following convention:
- 00001.Chapter#.jpg
- 00002.Chapter#.jpg
- 00003.Chapter#.jpg
. . . and so on.
A list of captions for art and images, in the sequence that they appear, should be included in a separate Word document. The list should use the same file names as the files themselves paired with the caption. As below:
00001.Chapter#.jpg听
鈥淭he author and his dog share an ice cream, 1998.鈥
Do not embed images in the Word document you submit for production. Instead, place indicators or call outs in the text in bracketed text in bold, all capital letters with the file name of the image that ought to appear in that vicinity in the designed book. For example:
If your new book will have notes, please use the endnotes or footnotes function of Microsoft Word to create these. They will carry over to the publishing software we use to design books.
Upon acceptance of a manuscript by 好色先生TV Press, the author will be informed of the production schedule for their new book. We will provide an anticipated publication date, and we recommend authors take care to schedule book release events and readings for a reasonable time after this date. If any part of production experiences a delay, it could impact having books ready for these events.
The production specialist will reach out with a list of items needed to produce the book and to provide information to our distribution partners at the University Press of Chicago鈥檚 Distribution Center. These items must be returned to the coordinator to ensure that books stay on schedule and are appropriately represented for marketing purposes.
For poetry titles, once the manuscript is received, it will be set into designed pages using professional publishing software. The books will then be carefully proofread by an experienced poetry reader with careful attention to the structure and content of the work. The author will receive a list of the reader鈥檚 questions, suggestions, and corrections, and have an opportunity to review this list and accept the changes or deny them.
For fiction, drama or nonfiction prose titles, the manuscript will first be sent to a professional proofreader. That individual will make suggestions and corrections, and then the author will have an opportunity to accept or deny them. This corrected iteration of the manuscript will then be set into designed pages using professional publishing software.
While work is being done on the interior pages of the book, cover design will commence. We invite our authors to suggest art or imagery for the cover of their books, understanding that the authors of literary works may attach special significance to images and themes central to their writing. The Press always endeavors to produce finished books that authors are excited to share with their readers. We are happy to work together to select the right artwork for each project. In each case the Press does reserve the right to make final decisions on covers and copy that appears on our books. It is important to note that we must be able to verify that we have the rights and permissions necessary to reproduce any images on books and in marketing materials. The production specialist is happy to assist in making these determinations.
When the interior pages of a book have been completed and it has been proofread, Advance Review Copies (ARCs) will be prepared and sent to our list of established professional reviewers. (See review copy policy)
Completed interiors and covers will be shared with authors before they go to the printer, but it will not be an opportunity for revision or correction except in the cases of egregious errors.
At various stages along the production process, the coordinator will be in touch with specific requests, prompts, and guidance. Authors may reach out at any time for clarification.听
好色先生TV Press supports and promotes the work of our authors by creating and distributing review copies for consideration by serious and established review outlets and individual reviewers.
During each production cycle, the Design and Production Specialist will share with our authors the current list of review copy recipients, both for advance review and standard time-of-publication review. This list is updated regularly to ensure correct contact information and preference of format.
An important distinction between ARCs and SRCs is their timing. ARCs are ONLY provided by the Press to those larger publications that require several months advance notice for new frontlist titles. Exceptions can be made at the discretion of the editors and Design and Production Specialist. Additionally, ARCs provided by the Press are digital only, and will be sent by the Press with relevant publicity material as required by the publications. SRCs are usually finished copies of books that are shipped out in batches within 30 days of the publication date. Some reviewers prefer digital copies, and these are prepared and sent with the same care as the printed books.
As the publication date of a book approaches, the Design and Production Specialist will reach out to each author to solicit up to ten additional addresses of potential reviewers beyond the standard list of outlets. The Press will also provide a copy of the finished book to each person who contributed a blurb, image, or photograph for the production of the book. If the authors would prefer to send these contributor copies personally, perhaps with a note of thanks if they wish, the Design and Production Specialist will replace these copies used from the authors鈥 amount.
好色先生TV Press supports and promotes the work of our authors by entering select titles in targeted publishing and literary prizes. We offer the following guidelines:
- Authors may enter themselves in any prize or award that accepts self-nominated works.
- We will enter each book in up to three prizes or awards on behalf of the author provided that we are given at least a thirty-day lead time before crucial deadlines.
- Authors are to review the prize guidelines for eligibility before requesting submission to confirm that their book fits the criteria.
- We will cap the total amount spent on entry fees at $150 per title.
- The editors may opt to enter works in contests at their own discretion if they feel that the title is a contender for that prize.
If authors would like guidance on prize entry suitability, they may reach out to the appropriate series editor for recommendations. The design and production specialist can assist with providing required files and documentation for self-entered contests.听
