Doherty Hall
Doherty Hall features three green roofs that utilize two different green roof systems. Two of the roof sections are planted in trays and the third area is a planted roof and exterior patio.
The roof garden that is a part of the Doherty is a semi-intensive Green Roof, planted to represent the natural form of vegetation: self-sustaining and evolving. The location of this roof and patio, adjacent to a woody hillside, allow the vegetated roof to blend into the landscape. This roof is also intended to be experienced by the campus community. Bluestone paving and hand picked and installed beach pebbles form a spiral walkway for access.
The two other Doherty green roofs are the result of the construction of the ANSYS building. That project required the relocation of planted trays that had been on the roof of Porter Hall. These trays currency exist on two small roof sections over the A level of Doherty Hall.
Featured Flora: The Doherty patio green roof design included planting Bugleweed (Ajuga repatans), Max Frei Geranium (Geranium sanguineum), Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca), and various species of Sedum.
Many of the A-level trays have become hosts for volunteer plants introduced by wildlife, especially local birds. This includes two small conifer trees that were not originally planted.
Location: Two green roofs are located on roofs above the A-level. The third green roof is a part of the Doherty patio, above the C-level.
Accessibility: The two green roofs above the A-level are not accessible, but the smaller area of green roof may be visible from these classrooms: A113, A215, and A217. The larger area of green roof can be viewed from classrooms and offices surrounding the roof and from the 2nd floor skybridge.
The Doherty patio roof is accessible by the rear exit of the B-level. Stairs lead down to the patio and green roof from The Cut and up from the grassy area behind the Gates Center.
