AI Engineering Fundamentals
Online Graduate Certificate
Who is this Program For?
Engineers who want to design, implement, and evaluate AI systems in real-world settings, this program emphasizes the foundational principles that underpin modern machine learning and artificial intelligence.
What You Will Learn
In less than a year, you will know how to design, implement and assess AI systems using the fundamental tools of machine learning. The curriculum emphasizes practical decision-making, model performance, and responsible application in real engineering environments.
The CMU Difference
All online certificate programs are not the same. This online experience is built using CMU's signature approach to online learning, ensuring complex concepts are taught with the same rigor and depth as on-campus study. All taught by CMU's world class faculty in live-online classes.
Curriculum Highlights
The AI Engineering certificate program is designed to give engineers the applied foundation needed to make informed decisions about how to use and implement AI in real-world engineering contexts. Students will learn to:Ìý
- Identify when and how to use AI for engineering problems
- Implement AI models effectively within real-world systems and workflows
- Evaluate model performance, tradeoffs, and reliability in practical settings
Students will develop a strong foundation in core machine learning concepts and techniques, moving beyond black-box approaches to emphasize interpretability, scalability, and the real-world tradeoffs inherent in modern deep learning.
Course Descriptions
Learn fundamental artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques for developing software that is foundational to next-generation design and analysis tools. In this course, you will explore topics like supervised and unsupervised learning, feature engineering, model selection and optimization, dimensionality reduction, and ensemble learning, and then complete the course with an introduction to deep learning. You’ll not only learn the theory behind these techniques, but how to efficiently implement them as well.
Through hands-on activities, you will learn the foundations of deep neural networks, their applications to engineering tasks, and how to use deep learning to solve complex engineering problems. In this course, you will explore topics like convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, long short-term memory, and generative adversarial networks.
Quality Online Learning for Working Professionals
Building core AI engineering skills means learning to think analytically, iterate on models and systems, and apply theory through practice in a rigorous yet flexible learning environment.
Rigor — Expect a rigorous learning experience with the same high academic standards as our on-campus offerings. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
Flexibility — Complete the program in less than a year through a combination of live online classes and self-paced activities that fit your schedule.
Live, online classes meet weekly with CMU faculty after work hours for interactive discussion, problem solving and collaborative learning.
Self-paced activities - readings, short lectures and applied exercises allow you to master concepts on your own timeline with ongoing faculty support.

Application Requirements
Designed for professionals with a strong quantitative foundation who want to build core AI engineering skills, the AI Engineering Fundamentals certificate prepares learners to succeed in graduate-level coursework and applied technical environments. Successful applicants have:
- A bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. While geared toward students with an engineering background, applicants with degrees in other quantitatively rigorous disciplines, such as mathematics, physics, or chemistry, will also be considered.
- Proficiency in core mathematical concepts, including successful coursework in linear algebra, calculus, statistics, and probability theory.
- Experience with Python or other programming languages. Familiarity with simple file input/output, arrays and matrices, functions, classes, and for/while loops is important, as is exposure to libraries such as NumPy and SciPy. Experience with other scientific programming languages, including MATLAB, Octave, R, C/C++, or Java, is also helpful.
- A motivated mindset and intellectual curiosity.
We encourage you to apply even if your background does not perfectly align with every requirement listed above. In some cases, preparatory or refresher work may be recommended to help ensure your academic success. Students with limited programming experience are encouraged to complete CMU's free online course, Principles of Computation with Python, prior to enrollment.
Ready to Build Your Future?
Tuition
We know that a graduate-level certificate represents a significant investment of both time and money. But we also know the impact of investing in your own personal growth.Ìý
See below of a full breakdown of tuition and more details on payment options.Ìý
Applicants who submit by the Priority Deadline are eligible for a partial fellowship award.Ìý
You will be notified of your award amount in your admission letter. Ìý
| Course | Investment |
|---|---|
| Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence for Engineers | $8,484 |
| Introduction to Deep Learning | $8,484 |
| Total Investment | $16,968 |
Financing Your Future
To help make the financial commitment more manageable, we offer a limited number of scholarships and flexible monthly payment plans. Students also use employer tuition reimbursement benefits, and the G.I. Bill to cover tuition costs. See below for more details on ways to make an investment in your future a reality.
Additional Fees & NotesÌý
- A $240 technology fee will be assessed each semester (subject to change).Ìý
- Tuition rates are for the current academic year only. If the certificate is not completed within that time frame, tuition may increase slightly for the following academic year.
Funding Information and Resources
All applicants who apply by the priority deadline are eligible for a partial fellowship award; those received later may be eligible if funds are still available. You will be notified at the time of admission of any awards. Fellowships are applied by course and are non-transferrable between courses or semesters.
The majority of our students use tuition reimbursement benefits from their company. While some policies won't cover certificate programs, since this certificate is credit-bearing and a verifiable credential, many organizations will allow tuition benefits.Ìý
And remember, fall enrollment will maximize benefits since most benefit plans are based on calendar year. Enroll in Fall 2026 and you will use both your 2026 and 2027 benefits to cover the program cost. If your employer is uncertain about providing financial support, or if you need specific documents to proceed with enrollment, contact a Program Specialist who will help highlight the value and benefits of completing an online certificate at Carnegie Mellon.Ìý
Visit this webpage to see examples of how employer tuition reimbursement can be structured throughout the semester.
A monthly payment option is available and breaks tuition into manageable monthly installments. Managed by Nelnet, students can enroll online.
