Printing Support Documentation

Need help connecting with a printer on campus? Explore our support documentation or reach out for assistance.

How to Add Printers in Dietrich on an Andrew Windows PC:

  • Log in to your computer using your Andrew username and password to the "ANDREW" domain
  • Add the printer queue:
    • Click "Start", then "Run", and type: \\hsscomp.hss.cmu.edu
    • Double click on the desired printer queue to add it听

The name of the printer can be found on a white label attached to the printer.听

NOTE: These printers will only show up for your username (i.e., each user needs to set up their own printers after they've logged into the computer).

How to Print in Dietrich from a Non-Andrew Windows PC:

In order to setup an Dietrich printer on a PC that is not a member of the ANDREW domain, you must perform the following steps. This procedure sets up your computer to reconnect and authenticate to the printer resources on the HSSCOMP print server.听

  • Email hsshelp@andrew.cmu.edu:
    • state that you will need permission to print
    • tell us which department you are associated with
    • provide your Andrew ID
  • On your Microsoft Windows computer:
    • Right-click "My Computer" (or "This PC" in later versions) and choose "Map Network Drive"
    • Set the drive letter to whatever you like (we like Z:)
    • Set the folder to be: \\hsscomp.hss.cmu.edu\hsscomp
    • Place a check in the box for "Reconnect at Logon"
    • Click "Connect Using Different Credentials"
    • Type "andrew\YOURUSERID" (YOURUSERID is your AndrewID)
    • Type your Andrew password and click "Ok", then click "Finish"
  • Add the printer queue:
    • Click "Start", then "Run", and type: \\hsscomp.hss.cmu.edu
    • Double click on the desired printer queue to add it听

The name of the printer can be found on a white label attached to the printer.听

Note: Since the "Reconnect at Logon" setting is not always reliable, you may occasionally find it necessary to double-click the mapped network drive to HSSCOMP to elicit the username/password dialog box and re-log in before printing.

How to Add Dietrich Printers in MacOS (OSX):

This is the supported method for connecting to Dietrich printers in MacOS (OSX) and higher.听

You will need to know the printer name and whether you want to use any finishing features (ie staple, hole punch, etc), and you will need to know the model as well.听

  • Make sure you are connected to the CMU network (wired or wireless)
  • From the Apple menu, choose "System Preferences"
  • In "System Preferences," click on "Printers and Scanners"
  • From the Printer List box, click the "+" button at the bottom left hand side
  • Choose "IP" at the top of the new window (it may be the default)
  • Configure as follows:
    • Address: hsscomp.hss.cmu.edu
    • Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
    • Queue: Enter the name of the printer
    • Name: Enter the name of the printer again
    • Location: Can leave blank or enter a location if you wish
    • Use: For basic printing you can use the Generic PostScript Printer. If you want to use finishing features like stapling you will need to select the model of the printer; if it is not available from the list you will need to download and install a driver for it. You can contact Dietrich Computing for assistance.
  • Click Add (if you get prompted for printer options, make sure you check the box for "Duplex Printing Unit").听

If you need any assistance please contact Dietrich Computing at (412) 268-5136 or hsshelp@andrew.cmu.edu.听
