Setting Up Your Site

Whether you're onboarding to work on an established site or you're building a brand new site from the ground up, follow our comprehensive guide to find instructions for common tasks needed to successfully build your site.

Configure the Header and Footer Regions

The header and footer regions are Site-Wide Elements which means they are displayed on every page of your site. If you're starting with a brand new site, configuring the header and footer regions is the first thing you'll want to do using the Setup Block

Set up menu block in Cascade.

The header and footer regions are configured in the Setup Block located at the base level of a site. To edit, select setup in the Asset Tree and click Edit in the Action Toolbar, OR right-click on Edit.

Work with Pages

This section contains all the things you need to build compelling pages for your website.

Create a Page

Creating a standard page in Cascade CMS.

To create a new page, whether you're building a Standard Page or a Special Page type like a Bio or News page, select the folder in the asset tree where you want to create the new page, or create a new folder if you need one.

Next, click Add Content > Page and complete the required information like the Page Name, Title, Description, and whether you want to include it in the navigation.

Edit an Existing Page

How to edit an existing page in Cascade CMS.

You may be coming on board to manage an existing site and just need to make updates to a page. Follow these steps to edit a page:

  1. Select the page in the Asset Tree
  2. Click Edit in the Action Toolbar OR right-click on page > Edit

Add a Hero

This step is optional. A Hero can be an image, News Article or a silent YouTube video with options to overlay text and add links. Multiple Heroes can be used for a rotating display.

When adding a Hero, you'll be required to upload two versions of the same thing using the following dimensions:

  • Hi-res (1400x700) - Used for high resolution displays like monitors
  • Mobile (900x600) - Used for mobile devices and smaller displays

Depending on the Type of Hero you choose, you will be prompted to complete more or less steps, including choosing a page for a news story, adding text overlay and more.

Add Content Types

There are several content types to establish page layout and accomodate a wide variety of material like text, images, videos, tables, slideshows, news feeds, calendars, link lists and more. By combining several content types, you can create engaging and informative website pages.

Content WYSIWYG

Example of content WYSIWYG in Cascade.

A default, open content area with optional add-ons to engage your website's visitors.

To add a WYSIWYG in page edit mode, start with a Content section or add a new one by clicking the plus sign (+) near an existing one. Select Content for the Type.

Under add, you may select Expand/Collapse and/or Sidebar. Sidebars will appear alongside the main content area in desktop view, and below the main content area in mobile view, and have several types including Links Lists, Event Lists or WYSIWYGs.

Grids

Grid content type in Cascade.

The grid content type consists of boxes displayed in a uniform layout across a page. Four grid types are available to accommodate a wide range of content including a Photo Grid, News Grid, Card Grid and a Mixed Grid.

A grid may contain 2, 3 or 4 columns and an unlimited number of rows, but at least one box must be populated with content. To add a Grid, select Grid for the Type. Depending on the type of grid you create, it will prompt you for different information like images, article links, RSS feeds and more.

Slideshows

Example of slideshow content type in Cascade.

A slideshow is a content type that rotates through images and corresponding text. The slides rotate automatically or you can use the controls at either side of the slideshow to manually rotate through them.

This content type is best used for highlighting photos from an event, showcasing a space or demonstrating a process.

Slideshow images should be 700 pixels the height is open. To add a Slideshow, select Slideshow for the Type.

Wide

Example of a wide content type in Cascade.

The wide content type is a WYSIWYG that spans the full width of a page. As with any WYSIWYG, you can add text, images, media and more.

Text is much easier to read in a smaller, contained space. For paragraphs of text, it's best to stick with the Content WYSIWYG. Use the Wide content type for large images, videos, Google Maps, calendars like Tockify, tables with a lot of columns or headings, quotes and page dividers.

To add a Wide element, select Wide for the Type.
